redefining the boundaries of visual storytelling

/Altered District was founded by Hazel Maria Bala, an AI product and creative professional with a background in emerging technology, design, storytelling, game design, and visual culture. She holds an MFA in Design & Technology from Parsons School of Design and a BA from New York University and serves as the publication’s editor-in-chief.

She created /Altered District as a platform specifically for self-expression using generative AI. Inviting creatives from all backgrounds to explore, experiment, and push the limits of their imagination while sharing their work with the world.

We’re less interested in what AI produces, but more in how individuals think, the depth of their imagination & their ability to command the AI.

What we value:

/Altered District prioritizes digital publication to support both still and moving image work.

Physical editions are produced only as needed—through limited runs or one-off purchases—to avoid unnecessary waste.

Copies are provided to contributors and collaborators as part of the editorial process.

Editorial & Storytelling CollaboratioN

/Altered District is an editorial platform exploring how AI reshapes fashion, glamour, beauty, art and visual storytelling.

Some contributors explore personal visual languages while others reinterpret historical references, combine influences, or move fluidly across different AI systems.

In all cases, we’re interested in the thinking behind the work:
• Choices made
• Constraints embraced
• Intent guiding the process
