redefining the boundaries of visual storytelling

Founded by Hazel Maria Bala, a visionary creative director, designer, and fashion photographer.

This platform serves as a canvas for innovative expression, inviting creatives from all backgrounds to explore, experiment, and push the limits of their imagination while presenting their work to the world.

We’re less interested in what AI produces, but more in how individuals think, the depth of their imagination & their ability to command the AI.

What we value:

/Altered District prioritizes digital publication to support both still and moving image work.

Physical editions are produced only as needed—through limited runs or one-off purchases—to avoid unnecessary waste.

Copies are provided to contributors and collaborators as part of the editorial process.

Editorial & Storytelling CollaboratioN

/Altered District is an editorial platform exploring how AI reshapes fashion, glamour, beauty, art and visual storytelling.

Some contributors explore personal visual languages while others reinterpret historical references, combine influences, or move fluidly across different AI systems.

In all cases, we’re interested in the thinking behind the work:
• Choices made
• Constraints embraced
• Intent guiding the process

FAQs

  • Altered District is a digital-first editorial platform examining the evolving relationship between fashion, visual culture, and AI.

Rather than focusing on tools or outputs alone, we’re interested in how individuals think—their imagination, creative judgment, and ability to direct AI as a medium.

Through selected collaborations, Altered District presents editorial imagery, film, and written context that highlight intent, authorship, and the creative decisions behind the work.

  • We welcome submissions from creators worldwide who are interested in showcasing their work on Altered District. To submit your work, please visit our Submissions page and follow the guidelines provided. Submissions should include a brief description of your editorial story or visual exploration, your prompting process, and any insights or learnings from your experience with AI tools. Our editorial team will review submissions on a rolling basis and notify you if your work is selected for feature.

  • Altered District is committed to presenting contributors’ work with care, clarity, and editorial intent. Selected contributions are featured within our digital issues alongside thoughtful context, framing, and interpretation.

Rather than operating as a promotional or community platform, Altered District supports contributors by offering focused editorial attention, highlighting the ideas, decisions, and visual reasoning behind their work. Where appropriate, we also explore opportunities for deeper collaboration through curated projects or partnerships that align with the platform’s editorial direction.

    And of course, free swag.
